How to Make Column Object
(Note: Use these instructions to create a Column with Pattern object.
The same method is also used for Appliqué, but Appliqué must form a closed-loop object.)

Click on Column Object tool (marked with red arrow). Studio will switch to creation mode. Left click on the working area to place the first point (marked by a cross).
If this is not the first object in the design, the first point will be placed automatically on the previous object's last point. Move this first point to the desired position if the new object does not touch the previous one.

Now place the second start point with left mouse click. Unlike fill or outline, a column has two sides. The first two points form a "base" from which the two sides are drawn. Please note that base is drawn as dashed line.

Next series of left clicks creates one of the sides. It is the second side because the second start point was selected.  The elements of this side seem like lines but they are in fact curves. The small circles are mid points of curves and are used to adjust curves.
Do not make too many nodes. Smooth edges can be created with just a few nodes.

Now left click on the very first point to select it.

Make a series of left clicks to create first side of column. Please note that end points of sides are connected by dashed line (end base) too.

Now select and move the middle points of curves (small circular nodes) to adjust the curves.

Please note: It is not necessary to create all elements before adjusting curves. Add elements, adjust nodes, add more nodes, in any order, just so the final result looks like picture below.

More complicated column objects require placing of Segment Ends at corners and other places as needed to define direction of stitches. It is not necessary in this simple case, but we will place it to show how to do it.

Left click on any square node except the ones that are ends of dashed lines (dashed lines are automatically also the Segment Ends).

Right click anywhere on the Working Area to access pop-up menu for editing and finishing object. Click on End of Segment command.

The Segment End is placed to your selected node. The node that is the nearest point on the second side is found automatically by Studio. The Segment End is displayed as a line with long dashes. This line defines stitch direction at this location.
Note: The shortcut key END can be used for insertion of Segment End instead of above menu.

Now the object can be finished. Right click anywhere on the Working Area. Use the Finish Object command from menu that appears. If Finish Object command is dimmed and inactive, it indicates that the second side has not been drawn.

Studio ends the creation/editing mode and displays the finished object. Please note the small circle at end of column object. This identifies the last point as well as the second side of object that is needed for some operations (separate move and rotation of just one side, for example).
Also, the finished object is displayed as a small icon in the Object Inspector window. The small red icon at the right side indicates that there will be jump stitch before this object (as it is first object in design). Eye icon indicates that object is visible on the Working Area.

Select the finished object with Transform tool (arrow). Right click on selection. Then use Generate Stitches command.

Please note that there is also command for changing parameters in this menu.

The column object is filled with stitches now. If not satisfied with result, use the Edit command from previous menu to return to editing mode and adjust the object.

Information about object size and number of stitches is displayed on status bar at bottom  of the screen.

If Studio does not generate stitches and reports "Unable to compile so twisted object" error, switch to Edit mode and insert some Segment Ends to object.
