Frequently Asked Questions

Questions:

  1. I cannot get the Sfumato program to work in any other color but black. When I preview the design it shows it in color but when I bring it up in the Editor it will only show the black. What do you think is my problem?

  2. I can't figure out how to open a .BMP file from my Paint Program and then change it to a .JEF file.

  3. Why when I save an image in Sfumato and open it up in editor, do all of the colors change from flesh colors etc to red and blue etc.  It doesn't hold the colors that show up in the sfumato program.

  4. When I select part of the image with the Elliptical Tool, and select CROP, that it crops to a SQUARE, not an Ellipse.

  5. I miss the Editing Command "Delete OUTSIDE Selection".

  6. The colors of image become strange when I resample image in Painter.

  7. When I scan a photo to use in Sfumato 2.0 , what is the best resolution for the scan?  My scanner can go up to 2400 DPI.  The photo is usually 3x5 inches in size.

  8. The picture of my grandchild's head comes out only half finished. It leaves the bottom half open.

  9. How do I possibly get the colors to show up correctly such as 2 shades of brown for the hair, 2 shades of skin tones for the face and red and white for the dress in the appropriate places?  I have tried adjusting with density, color palette, threshold, gamma, brightness, etc but it doesn't keep colors from mixing in where they shouldn't.

Answers:

  1. Q:  I cannot get the Sfumato program to work in any other color but black. When I preview the design it shows it in color but when I bring it up in the Editor it will only show the black. What do you think is my problem?
    A:
The fact that preview of design is color and result in the Editor is just black color is caused by limitation of demo version of Sfumato that truncates finished designs. Usually, the first color is black. The rest of stitches (and colors in this case) is cut off in demo version. Of course, the registered version produces complete designs.

  2. Q:  I can't figure out how to open a .BMP file from my Paint Program and then change it to a .JEF file.
A:  You need to have Embird with Sfumato Stitch plug-in.
    The procedure is as follows:
    1. Open Embird, open Editor, click Insert Sfumato Stitch design.
    2. In Sfumato Stitch open the BMP file and set all controls so that preview design in Preview window looks good.
    3. Hit Compute Stitches button in Sfumato to generate design.
    4. When design is finished, Sfumato will ask you whether to return to Embird Editor or no. Click Yes.
    5. Design will appear in Embird Editor. Now you can save design in JEF format.

  3. Q:  Why when I save an image in Sfumato and open it up in editor, do all of the colors change from flesh colors etc to red and blue etc.  It doesn't hold the colors that show up in the sfumato program.
    A:
You probably mean the Color Map. Editor opens Color Map image in untrue colors to show paricular color areas in better contrast. Also, Color Map must be edited in fixed palette of untrue colors, because otherwise Sfumato would not recognize edited Color map. Opening Color Map in untrue colors is normal and does not mean error. Edit Color Map in untrue colors and when you load it back to Sfumato, colors will return to true colors (flesh etc.).

  4. Q:  When I select part of the image with the Elliptical Tool, and select CROP, that it crops to a SQUARE, not an Ellipse.
    A:
Cropping of image always results in rectangular image, because image must be always rectangular. If you want to delete background outside of ellipse, make elliptical selection, invert selection and then hit DELETE key on keyboard.

  5. Q:  I miss the Editing Command "Delete OUTSIDE Selection".
    A:
To delete outside of selection, please make selection, then use command from menu SELECT -> INVERT SELECTION and then hit DELETE key on keyboard.

  6. Q: The colors of image become strange when I resample image in Painter.
    A:
This happens when your screen is set to low number of colors. Sfumato requires High Color or True Color screen mode.

  7. Q:  When I scan a photo to use in Sfumato 2.0 , what is the best resolution for the scan?  My scanner can go up to 2400 DPI.  The photo is usually 3x5 inches in size.
    A:
The Sfumato uses 128 pixels for 1 inch of final design size. So, if you want design in 4 inches height, image should be 512 pixels high. This does not mean that you should scan with 128 dpi, because photo is usually smaller or larger than design that you are going to produce. Scan the photo so that image has 128 pixels per inch of required size of design.

  8. Q:  The picture of my grandchild's head comes out only half finished. It leaves the bottom half open.
    A:
Designs generated with demo version of Sfumato are limited in number of stitches. Therefore, design comes out incomplete. Registered version produces whole designs.

  9. Q:  How do I possibly get the colors to show up correctly such as 2 shades of brown for the hair, 2 shades of skin tones for the face and red and white for the dress in the appropriate places?  I have tried adjusting with density, color palette, threshold, gamma, brightness, etc but it doesn't keep colors from mixing in where they shouldn't.
    A:
You have to edit the Color Map of design, because if there is same color on shirt and face, program cannot automatically decide where the face ends and shirt begins. Color Map shows how the colors are assigned to particular areas of design. Sfumato generates the Color Map automatically. With editing of Color Map you can manually change the layout of colors.
    Please follow these steps:

    1. Enable as many color as you want to have in design.
    2. Adjust colors as closely to desired result as possible.
    3. Save color map and edit it (retouch) to change layout of colors.
    4. Load edited color map and hit Compute Stitches.
