Use of Sfumato - Advanced Techniques

Retouch of Color Map

When doing multicolor design, Sfumato reduces number of colors of image to several scales of thread colors. Color reduction is based on color similarity. It may happen, that Sfumato assigns other color to some area than you would like to have there. For example, the marked area on below picture should be of the same color as shirt and not as face. In such cases, you can manually edit the Color Map of design to adjust colors layout.

Editing of Color Map may be also desirable:

  • if you want to add some color blending manually (see Color Blending chapter for more detail)

  • if you want to remove color dots from designs made from magazines or other printed material scans.

If you want to edit Color Map, click Save button in Color Map window to save Map on the disk.

Open the Color Map in Painter instead of original Image. Do not forget to save image before opening Color Map. Select the area that you want to change with Selection Tool.

Select Pick Tool. Pick color that you want to remove with right button click (i.e. select as background color) from image. Then pick color that will replace the previous color with left button click (i.e. select as foreground color) from image. Use Edit / Replace Background Color with Foreground Color function from menu to replace one color with other. Do the same with darker shades.

a) When finished with editing, save image to disk to store edited Color Map. Then open original image in Painter again.

b) Load edited Color Map to Color Map window. Sfumato will Lock the Map to prevent its change.

c) Hit Preview. Below picture shows that edited area has right colors now.

Please note: if you use edited Color Map, part or Sfumato controls will be locked. Therefore adjust parameters that affect Color Map first, and then edit Color Map if necessarry.
